SUTCLIFFE JUGEND – Pursuit of Pleasure Album Review

Pursuit of Pleasure is the second album release by legendary Power Electronics duo Sutcliffe Jugend for 2012. It has also been 4 years (in 2008) since their last album release on vinyl format (Sutcliffe Jugend/Prurient “End of Autumn“).

Pursuit of Pleasure is released in 2 different numbered editions of 300 copies each: Asia & USA/Europe/ROTW. Each numbered edition comes in different vinyl colours that is individually hand-stamped (Asia: Red/Gold Vinyl & USA/Europe/ROTW: Black/Clear Vinyl), inner sleeve (Asia: Yellow & USA/Europe/ROTW: Blue) as well as a hand numbered A3 Poster (Asia: Victims & USA/Europe/ROTW: Peter Sutcliffe). The album is made of 180 gm virgin vinyl and housed in high quality gatefold cardboard packaging inserted in a thick resealable polypropylene sleeve with a numbered album description sticker.

Comprising 7 tracks in total, Pursuit of Pleasure starts off with an instrumental track titled Involuntary Abortion Slide that reminds one of early SPK Auto-Da-Fe’s factory-line industrial churn of drowned out drones and abrasive screeches. This sets the course out for the entire album as it progresses into the encompassing textural layers of crazed noise that is Revengance. Further aggravated by Kevin Tomkin’s deranged rants and screams of agony, Revengance is almost incomprehensible to the sane. This 2nd track is executed in their trademark style of old school power electronics, but in a more structured manner orchestrated with the brutal organic assault of white noise overlaid by complexed layers of electronic feedback that resonate with piercing aural harshness. Together with Kevin Tomkin’s frenzied wails, they weave seamlessly well together with its high frequencies and overall disturbing tonal quality. Paul Taylor contributes to With Brutal Intent with his verbal tirade of anguished and maniacal outbursts. Just like a madman, he appears to be exacerbated by the tensions between his own drastic perversions and forlorn despair through sounding almost pained and tortured with his intent of brutality. The album concludes with Kevin’s personal favourite Shy, which is an epic track that stretches for over 14 minutes. Initially starting out as a haunting ambient introduction of drone loops and synth sounds, Kevin’s gentle whispers gradually build up into the background of harsh electronics and feedback loops. Struggling between the multitude of white noise and screeches, Kevin’s whispers gradually elevate into psychotic screams of fuckraging aural armageddon, through commanding his victim to ‘SWALLOW!’

Overall, Pursuit of Pleasure demonstrates the maturity of Sutcliffe Jugend as an experimental outfit who has redefined themselves through creative manipulation of sound textures. From their progressive redevelopments of careful structured organic elements of audio layers over the decades, this album brings forth the innovative evolution that highlights the creative processes of both Kevin and Paul, departing from the original 80’s power electronics style of harsh noise into progressive post genre movements. This album successfully emphasizes Sutcliffe Jugend’s artistic creativity as visionary musicians through their conscious attempt of reinventing themselves by incorporating new influences and their personal interests to break new ground in the contemporary experimental music scene.

IDEOLOGIC ORGAN #2: PHURPA + COLIN POTTER + SLOMO (9 June 2012)

IDEOLOGIC ORGAN #2: PHURPA + COLIN POTTER + SLOMO
Phurpa

Saturday 9 June 2012

Door Times : 8pm
Tickets : £12 advance / £14 on the door

For the first event in Stephen O’Malley’s Ideologic Organ series at Cafe OTO Elodie played the quietest set we’ve ever hosted as the snow fell outside and Eyvind Kang & Jessika Kenney took us on a trip through the resonant possibilities of ancient harmony. Properly magical!

The second concert in the series promises something very special, too. This time we’re bringing over Phurpa from Russia to present their own slowed-down, extra-heavy take on the rgyud-skad tradition of Tantric overtone chanting alongside a rare solo performance by Colin Potter of Nurse with Wound and the bass heavy organ pedal/synth/guitar drone of Slomo (Chris McGrail / Howard Marsden).

Phurpa were responsible for the now sold out first issue on O’Malley’s Editions Mego facilitated imprint, the stunning 2LP set ‘Trowo Phurnag Ceremony’.

PHURPA

This voyage began in the middle of the 1990’s in Moscow, when a group of artists and musicians led by Alexei Tegin and based at the legendary Fabrique of Cardinal Art commenced their studies of traditional ritual music, drifting away from the field of contemporary electroacoustic and industrial music with the intent to delve deeper into the ancient musical cultures of the ancient Egypt, Iran and Tibet.

The original 2003 lineup of the project that emerged as a result was dubbed Phurpa (one of the five tutelary deities of the Father Tantra in Bon tradition), and all the members have carried on with their research in the field of Bon and Buddhist liturgies up to the present day.

Before Buddhism reached Tibet, local people had practiced involved shamanic rites derived from various ancestral cults. Later on, circa the VI-IX century AD, a conflict between the local tradition, namely, the pre-Buddhist religion of Bon (which originates from Central Asia) and Tantric Buddhism (hailing from the North of India) gave birth to a unique cultural phenomenon known as Tibetan Buddhism, which combines an extensive metaphysical corpus and an advanced philosophical system with pristine ceremonial practices that reach down through many centuries. In the X-XI century AD the monastic ensemble came into being. It has got a lot in common with the Chinese court ensembles of the Tang dynasty; nevertheless, the Tibetan ceremonial ensemble has preserved its authenticity and kept a large number of primordial elements stemming from the ancient Tibeto-Burmanese music intact to this day. A typical ensemble usually includes a pair of nga drums, several rolmo cymbals and a pair of gyaling oboes, as well as telescopic dunchen horns, dunkar shells and short wandun horns. One of the unique features of the Tibetan monastic choir is a specific kind of overtone chanting, called “rgyud-skad”, or the Tantric voice, which is based on the principle of the singer’s transmogrification during the so-called “chanting meditation”.

COLIN POTTER

Colin Potter is a sound engineer and musician. He has been involved in the field of electronic and experimental music for over thirty years. Based at his own IC studio, he has recorded, produced and distributed a wide array of projects. He has gained a reputation for innovative mixing and sound processing, working with artists such as Current 93, Fovea Hex, Ora, Organum, Monos, Andrew Chalk, Jonathan Coleclough and, most notably, with Steven Stapleton on many albums by the renowned Nurse With Wound. Several solo works have been released, as well as many collaborations.

In the late Nineties, a desire to return to live performance has led to appearances at the Beyond Music festival in Los Angeles, 7Hz in San Francisco, the Liverpool Biennial, the Termite festival in Leeds, the Earational festival in Holland, the Donau festival in Austria, Brainwaves in Boston, All Tomorrow’s Parties, Ether festival at London South Bank, Villette Sonique in Paris, Resonator festival in Preston, REC festival in Reggio Emilia, Radar festival in Mexico City, Settembre Musica in Turin, the AvantGarde festival in Hamburg and numerous concerts in New York, San Francisco, Seattle, Portland, Moscow, Berlin, Munster, Warsaw, Wroclav, Kracow, Gdansk, Paris, Venice, Ghent, Brno, Vienna, Porto, Barcelona, Brighton, Bristol, Nottingham, Edinburgh and London.

SLOMO

Slomo is the duo of Chris ‘Holy’ McGrail on Moog Taurus II, Sunn Mustang and ‘Clatter’ and Howard Marsden on Korg MS10 & MS20 and ‘Hiss’. Together they create a brooding wasteland of subsonic bass and desolate drone. Their two releases ‘The Bog’ and ‘The Creep’ are available from Important Records.

“If the doom metal of Khanate is the ideal soundtrack to the 21st Century Odinists’ hanging upon the tree of Yggdrasil, then the vegetal music of Slomo is the unfolding, nurturing, ever-becoming ur-ooze that titanically irrigates the roots of that sacred tree. Slomo restores our timeless beginnings and fulfills the Ginnungagap — motherfuckers.” Julian Cope

5/10 according to Mike (Norman Records) on Fri 07 Feb, 2014

Here’s my last review before the weekend! It’s this limited edition LP from Sutcliffe Jugend which is beautifully presented in a gatefold sleeve on splattery red vinyl with an poster and everything. The sleeve, poster (of Peter Sutcliffe’s victims…pretty macabre) and vinyl itself are all individually numbered. That must’ve taken ages!

On the vinyl itself is a load of devastating power electronics and antisocial industrial noise, dentist-drill drones, radio static, bilious screamed rants processed into steaming, hissing white noise. It’s confrontational and horrible and in your face, just the kind of discomfiting noise scree you’d expect from a record which comes with a poster of a serial killer’s victims. It probably shouldn’t exist, but it does and you can buy it. You’ll probably think it’s either great or upsetting. I think it’s both so I’m giving it a 5.

Episode 2: A Special Form of Darkness (Tramway, Glasgow from 24-26 Feb 2012)

Featuring Junko (Hijokaidan) and Kylie Minoise:

Junko is one of the founding members of the defining Japanese Noise band Hijokaidan (who helped to establish Noise music in Japan through a series of near-legendary performances involving no small amount of disgust and bodily fluids). She is the owner of the most intense voice in music.

Her solo vocal performances are incredibly musical and harrowing confrontations with the very real, physical and aural trauma of a woman screaming.

To really get to grips with what is so affecting in being confronted with Junko’s solo performances then it helps us at least to deal with them on an emotional level, but also to try and understand how this experience forces you to think – a kind of conceptual experience – and what it might allude to. When we have seen Junko perform, there just seems to be something deeply symbolic about it: is a scream a break in language and in what can be said? Is it the otherness of language, or maybe a contradiction: both alive and dead, existing and not, moving between the real and the non-real? Is a female scream the perfect embodiment of Julia Kristeva’s idea of abjection in art?

“Beauty will be convulsive or will not be at all.”
André Breton

Kylie Minoise:

Lea Cummings is a English musician and artist best known under the alias Kylie Minoise.

Born in September 1974 in Lancaster and currently based in Glasgow, Cummings was the bassist for hardcore rock trio Phobophilia for some years before forming Opaque in 1997. An ever changing unit with Cummings as the only constant, the unit built up an extensive discography, culminating with the release of the New Ways To Criticise CD in 2004 and a full European tour in July of that year. Their live performances could polarise opinion, with one particularly volatile show captured on the Live In Dundee 28.11.02 EP; an audience member disliked the group so much that he unplugged one of the amplifiers.

Opaque was put on hold in 2004 with Cummings beginning a series of new projects, most notably his Kovorox Sound label which provided a platform for most of his new music and that of peers whom Cummings admired and respected, including Birds Of Delay, Birchville Cat Motel, Kenji Siratori, Ocelocelot (Mel Delaney of Ashtray Navigations, Noma and Nackt Insecten as well as noise artists from as far afield as Russia and China. However, he has become best known performing solo as Kylie Minoise, garnering a considerable reputation for his loud, confrontational Live Aktions which are often brief and invariably culminate in broken microphones and, occasionally, in personal injury.

Described in The Wire (issue 274) as “a short sharp shock of slobbering one-man hara-kiri and gonzo pantomime nihilism”, these performances capture the raw, cathartic spontaneity of Cummings’ aesthetic and he has toured extensively with this project. Interviewed by Plan B, he said “Kylie Minoise is the side of me that likes to make a few cracks in normality, cause a bit of discomfort and increase a few pulses” (issue 17, Dec 2006/Jan 2007).
