That tearful day,
Which will rise from the ashes,
A guilty man to be judged.
Therefore spare him, O God:
Pious Jesus Lord,
Grant them rest. Amen.
In light of recent events, the album has taken on an even deeper resonance. Nature can feel cruel and indifferent, and the violence of personal events this year is difficult to comprehend. There is a stark awareness of how fortunate one can be not to fully grasp the depth of suffering others may be experiencing, especially when it touches someone close. – Kevin Tomkins

Memento Mori is a deeply intimate, sincere, and unmistakably heartfelt album shaped by themes of death and loss. This release marks a new direction in the solo work of Kevin Tomkins – one that he intends to continue exploring moving forward.
Built largely around synthesizer-driven instrumentals, the first two tracks portray a powerful emotional impact of loss and emotion. Kevin’s forlorn vocals allow the music itself to carry most of the emotional weight. Through a rising mix of anger and hopelessness, the title track shifts into something bleaker and more reflective, tracing the arc of life itself and confronting the inevitability of our own mortality. Repeated patterns mixed with elements of noise build to an emotional climax, finally ending with the capture of life: birth, growth into adulthood, and death itself.
Exploring different subjects going forward, there will be more to follow in this vein. In many ways, it represents the kind of music Tomkins has long wanted to create outside of Sutcliffe Jugend and Sutcliffe No More. Less experimental and revealing a different kind of violence, again Tomkins finds beauty in difficult spaces.
